The Most Bizarre Team Names In Sports

There are plenty of great sports teams out there. With names like the Los Angeles Kings, the Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Bulls, some teams have names that drive intimidation and fear in their opponents. On the other hand, there are some teams out there, even those playing in major leagues like the NFL, the MLB, the NBA, and the NFL, with names that leave a lot to be desired.

Here are five of the most bizarre team names in sports.

This minor league baseball team plays out of Montgomery, Alabama. Its logo features a personified biscuit with butter for a tongue, which is peaking out from behind the team's signature M.

With such a peculiar team name, many would think that it has special meaning to those who come from the area or to the team itself. However, the name 'Biscuits' was selected randomly when locals were asked to submit ideas for the team's name in 2004.

2. UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs

When it comes to peculiar names for sports teams, the Banana Slugs is pretty high on this list. The school's teams were unofficially represented by their slimy mascot until 1980 when the schools' chancellor opted to change the name to the Sea Lions; however, in 1986, students voted to bring back the school's beloved Banana Slug and since then, it's adorned all official Santa Cruz team merchandise and jerseys.

3. Akron Rubberducks

Akron, Ohio's minor league baseball team, the Rubberducks, was established in 1997. The team's mascot is, as one would assume, an oversized rubber duck. Unlike many other teams with bizarre names, this team chose its name as a nod to one of the area's largest exports: rubber.

4. Hartford Yard Goats

Yet another minor league baseball team with a strange name is the Hartford Yard Goats, playing out of Hartford, Connecticut. Just as with the Montgomery Biscuits, the name 'Yard Goats' was selected after the team hosted a Name the Team contest. While the name seems random at first, it's actually slang for switch engines, which pays homage to the Hartford rail yards that are across from the team's home stadium.

5. Southern Arkansas Muleriders

The Muleriders of Southern Arkansas University play a variety of sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and golf. The team's name is said to be an ode to its beginnings, when football teams may have ridden mules to get to football games off-campus. The logo for the school is just what one would expect it to be — a man riding a mule through a horseshoe.
